Quit Smoking with Acupuncture

Acupuncture as an alternative approach to smoking cessation has a growing number of converts. It is estimated that most smokers will attempt to quit 2 or 3 times, or more, before finally kicking the habit. When conventional methods to quit smoking, such as nicotine gum or patches, have failed, smokers often look outside the mainstream and turn to alternative medicine.

Acupuncture is not a panacea or a magic cure in the treatment of any addiction, including smoking. But, acupuncture is effective in making it easier to quit and remain smoke-free. If you are highly motivated and ready to quit, acupuncture can empower you to take control and begin a healthy and smoke-free life!

I offer a Stop Smoking" pack which consisted of an initial consultation (1hour) in which I look at your medical and smoking history, lifestyle and use methods from Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis before designing a personalised treatment plan. This is followed by 5 half hourly sessions spaced out depending on the individual needs.

Does it just involve the ear or are other points involved?

There are no "magic" acupuncture points for smoking cessation. Each patient is custom-treated according to his or her specific and unique diagnosis. Usually a combination of body acupuncture points and points on the ear are used.

Are any other techniques used between sessions?

Exercise is encouraged and dietary recommendations are given (foods to avoid and foods to be included during the withdrawal phase). Sometimes a small metal pellet is tacked onto a specific point on the ear to reduce cravings.

How does acupuncture compare to other methods?

Because the acupuncture smoking termination program is individualised, it is often successful for those who have been unable to stop smoking through other methods. Often my patients may have tried nicotine gum, patches or some type of organised program. If the individual sticks with it, the acupuncture quitting program can lead to permanent cessation.

My acupuncture program to help you quit smoking will only be effective if you meet me halfway. Acupuncture will not "do it" for you. You need to have a genuine desire to quit smoking. It's very important to enlist the support of friends and family. Everyone will respond to acupuncture and quitting smoking differently. Some may sail through the process with little or no problems, while others may have a harder time with withdrawal. Be assured that acupuncture can reduce the stress and difficulty of quitting smoking, and can aid you in your decision to quit smoking.
